- Backhoes dig deeper: median 14.6 ft vs 9.2 ft (≈59% more). If your trenches or footings go past ~11.7 ft, most mini excavators run out of reach.
- Backhoes are a much larger machine class: median 85 hp vs 24 hp. Mini excavators span the small end (15–43 hp), backhoes the mid range (46–101 hp).
One tool vs two, and how you get to site
- Confined, precise, or finished sites: a mini excavator rotates 360°, works hard against walls and foundations, and its tracks disturb the ground less. Choose a mini excavator.
- Open utility work where you also load and haul: a backhoe is a loader and a digger in one, and drives itself between jobs on the road — no trailer. Choose a backhoe.
- Getting to site: a mini excavator needs a trailer and a tow vehicle; a backhoe is road-legal. For scattered small jobs, that alone can decide it.
- Space: minis reach into gates, back gardens, and indoors; a backhoe needs room to position and swing.
Format, rotation, road-legality, and ground-disturbance points are machine-type characteristics, not figures from our dataset — no numbers are asserted for them.
How this comparison is built. Every figure is a statistic over our full population of each class, using only QA-passed values (suppressed values excluded, never counted as zero); sample size (n) travels with each figure. The axes are dig depth and engine power, each populated for 87%+ of both classes. Operating weight and bucket capacity are held out: mini excavators do not publish bucket capacity in our source, and backhoe operating weight is both sparse (53%) and, where present, largely sourced from a "max weight" label that is not cleanly operating weight — so comparing on it would be misleading. Rated operating capacity and tipping load are not reported for either class. No figure on this page is estimated.
